~HERO NUMBER 7~
The First Dog Biscuits
It started, like many things, with seamen, if not the sea itself. In 1860 an American businessman watched from his warehouse on the docks of the Thames as the stray dogs scavenged for fish heads among the barges. The sailors would feed them little scraps of their hardtack biscuits, a staple to help avoid scurvy. Mr Spratt (of Spratts lol) saw an opportunity and set about creating the perfect dried food for dogs: Spratt’s Patent Meat Fribine Dog Cakes. Catchy!
Secret Biscuits Recipes
What exactly was in these dog biscuits is a bit of a mystery. The first advertising campaign showed Native American’s slaying bison on the prairies. Those that followed showed herbs and spices being mixed into various meat formulae, aimed at the wealthy’s sporting dogs. But with perseverance and some business acumen, Spratt soon took his bites across the pond, convincing Americans as well as British that dogs just like their human counterparts, deserve treats too. He succeeded of course and the rest, as we say, is history!
We’ve come a long way in the dog snack industry, thankfully. Now we no longer have to give our faithful hounds biscuits filled with mystery meat or low-grade ingredients served up to us without any choice! This commitment to doing what’s best for our pooches is certainly our chief motivation in starting Franks.
